The HP Omen 15 laptop has a modest appearance, there’s a lot to like about it once you look past the dreary grey surface. Along with the fantastic RTX 3060, you’ll get a good AMD Ryzen CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD—all of which add up to a solid specification. The fact that it’s $400 cheaper than its regular retail price only adds to the appeal. For $899, you’re getting a good laptop.
The GeForce RTX 3060 is paired with a 15.6-inch 1080p IPS panel with a 144Hz refresh rate and 300 nits of peak brightness. The RTX 3060 is an excellent GPU for 1080p gaming, with smooth frame rates even at maximum settings. In esports favourites like CS:GO and Valorant, you could even be able to hit that silky-smooth refresh rate. Basically, this is a fantastic screen and GPU combination.
Even at this low price point, there are some excellent CPUs to be found in modern laptops, and the Ryzen 5 5600H comfortably fits into that bracket. This is a 6-core, 12-thread Zen 3 processor that can accelerate to 4.2GHz under load, making it an excellent choice for gaming. It’s also no slouch at more difficult number-crunching jobs.
Generally, I’d have to start talking about tradeoffs at this stage, especially when it comes to storage and RAM capabilities, but that’s not the case here. HP has done an excellent job with the setup of this computer WITH 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, configured in a 2x 8GB configuration for maximum memory throughput, as well as a completely healthy 512GB NVMe SSD. With this machine, you won’t need to schedule any updates for the near future.
Support for the latest Wi-Fi 6 standard, as well as 1Gb ethernet for fast wired connections, round out the specifications. Bluetooth 5 is also supported correctly, and there are enough of USB connections to plug in your accessories. There’s even a slot for SD cards.
Overall, this laptop has a lot to offer, especially for the price. You could do a lot worse than this if you’re looking for some portable 1080p gaming.
