KKR even won their first game of the new season, comprehensively defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to kick off the Shreyas Iyer era. Meanwhile, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) faltered after a strong batting performance against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to produce a disastrous bowling performance.
Faf du Plessis’ men need to get their bowling act together while they wait for Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood to return.
The match will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, with RCB looking to earn their first points of the IPL 2022 season and KKR looking to continue their winning streak.
Faf du Plessis, Anuj Rawat, Virat Kohli, and Dinesh Karthik, the RCB’s top four, all got some time in the middle against PBKS and scored some runs. With little batting to follow in Maxwell’s absence, the quartet will be put under a lot of pressure once more.
The most concerning issue for RCB would be how to handle Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine’s spin threats. Maxwell, as he did last season, would have been the ideal guy to take them on, but Du Plessis, Kohli, and Karthik aren’t the best candidates to accelerate in the middle overs.
KKR’s bowling lineup will be confident of restricting the RCB batters, with Shivam Mavi and Umesh Yadav delivering decent pace up top as well.
Despite a strong performance against CSK, KKR’s batting lineup did not inspire much confidence. Accurate bowling schemes can limit Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, and Shreyas Iyer, while the middle order of Sheldon Jackson, Andre Russell, and Sunil Narine hasn’t spent enough time in the middle this year. Wanindu Hasaranga, who struggled against PBKS, might be an important player for RCB.
The RCB versus PBKS match in IPL 2022’s first game at the DY Patil Stadium created an exceptional batting wicket. This might work in KKR’s favour, since they have a bowling assault to help them outscore their opponents. A close game might be expected, but KKR and the venue appear to have conspired to produce a defeating match-up.
