Call of Duty can skip 2023, but Warzone 2 will not!

In 2023, it appears like Call of Duty will go a year without a mainline game for the first time since 2004. According to Bloomberg, the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty game that was supposed to be released in 2023 will now be released in 2024. The new Infinity Ward Modern Warfare sequel, as well as plans for a sequel to the free-to-play Call of Duty: Warzone, are still on schedule for this year.

Bloomberg reports that a “new free-to-play online” game will be released in 2023, though it is unlikely to resemble a regular Call of Duty game with a campaign and 6v6 multiplayer.

This is most likely referring to Warzone 2, which will have a new “sandbox” mode and is being development by Infinity Ward.

According to the source, the successor to Modern Warfare 2 will receive two years of post-launch support to make up for the gap left by the delay. Aside from Warzone, Call of Duty titles usually only get a year’s worth of new maps and modes before another COD game replaces it.

Following Bloomberg’s revelation, Activision responded to Gamers with the following statement (also provided by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier): “We have an exciting schedule of premium and free-to-play Call of Duty experiences for this year, next year, and beyond.” Allegations to the contrary are false.

The decision to wait can be related to Call of Duty: Vanguard’s dismal sales, according to Bloomberg’s sources familiar with the idea. Because sales were lower than planned, officials “suspected that it had been cannibalised by the prior year’s game,” which most likely relates to Warzone’s sustained success.

While Activision has published new mainstream COD games like 2020’s Black Ops – Cold War and 2021’s Vanguard, the standalone battle-royale-focused game has been updated continuously for two years.

Treyarch appears to be stepping aside for Warzone 2’s release in 2023.The sources further confirmed that the delay had nothing to do with Activision’s $69 billion sale to Microsoft.
